After the second wave of floods hit Assam two weeks ago, 24 lakh people in 28 districts of the state remain affected. Although the situation is gradually improving, certain areas in Cachar district’s Silchar are still submerged, especially after an embankment breach last week.
On Tuesday, the floodwaters claimed five lives, bringing the total death toll this year to 122. Additionally, 17 people lost their lives in landslides triggered by the heavy rains. Most rivers are now below the danger level, except for Kopili at Dharamtul (Morigaon), Beki at Road Bridge (Barpeta), and the Brahmaputra at Nimatighat (Jorhat), as reported by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority.
Continuing his visit to the flood-affected areas, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inspected regions in Bajali and Barpeta districts on Tuesday. He tweeted about visiting relief camps to assess ongoing flood-relief measures and assured relief to all affected people, while also announcing plans for dredging the Harijan river to mitigate future floods.
Meanwhile, Jayanta Mallabaruah, the Minister for Public Health Engineering, has been assigned to manage the flood situation in Cachar. He held a flood review meeting and emphasized coordination for evacuation and proper distribution of relief materials, including medicines and animal feed.
In neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, three people died due to incessant rainfall last week. A landslide in Naharlagun claimed the life of a 36-year-old woman, Sangio Yapa, and injured three others. In Papum Pare district, four individuals were swept away by the swollen Hollongi River at Huto Village. Since April, a total of 15 people have lost their lives in floods and landslides in the state.
